Galvin Watches, Inspiration From Mother Nature
Welcome to another microbrand review. Today I have a pretty special piece, The Loimu Tundra by The Galvin Watch Company. This watch was sent to me by Susan Galvin the co-founder of this family owned business. Susan has worked for some of the biggest names in the industry as a watchmaker since 2007 , but unfortunately in 2020 while out on maternity leave , she was made redundant. But rather then feel sorry for herself, she decided to follow her dream, of starting her own watch company so with the help of family and friends along with a successful online fundraising campaign , The Galvin Watch Company was born.
Let's get into it, Starting as always with The Case, made from the old reliable 316L stainless steel with a diameter of 38mm and a lug to lug of just 45mm, it's fair to say The Loimu is definitely a unisex watch. It features a polished case and bracelet along with a guilloche inscribed screw-down caseback with a water resistance of just 100 meters, not that matters too much as this is not a watch for the sea, more of a watch to worn and admired on land.
Let's talkabout the star of the show, The dial inspired the aurora borealis ( The northern lights) feature a truly mesmerizing purple guilloche dial, which if you look at it long enough, it will have a hypnotic effect on you. The dial itself features polished numerals at 12, 6, and 9 o clock with an incased date window at 3 o clock. A chapter ring occupies the outside of the dial adding a touch a class to this elegant piece. Apart from the guilloche dial, the star of the show on The Loimu is undoubtedly the Swiss C3 Lume , which not only covers the polished hour, minute, and seconds hands but also the hour markers and the crown, Yes I said the crown. its really does a touch of class to the watch and is truly striking to look at, through the watch's crystal clear, sapphire crystal.
Finally, we have the Movement, and with a watch with this much class you'd expect a great movement and that's exactly what you get, with the Miyota 9015 Automatic Movement, which features a perfectly adequate 42 hour reserve , hacking, and 24 jewels to ensure all the watch mechanics run smoothly.
At the time of this review , The Loimu was actually fully funded in just six minutes on kickstarter, but don't despair there is still time to get yours at the early bird price of just 302 euros, RRP will be 450euros and with a choice of 6 colors, I would suggest, if your interested , act Now not later. Simply put the Loimu is a beautiful watch, well crafted, with a truly magnificent dial, reliable movement and Excellent lume. Susan and her family have done an exceptional job and I for one cant wait to see what they come up with next. Click the link below to check out the kickstarter campaign. As always thanks for reading and check back in next week for the next review.
